Solidarity Letter of the LALIT to
UUI after
the arrest of Qasim Hadi and Adil Salih on
November 23.2003
Dear friends and comrades in the Unemployed Union of
Iraq
We write to you from Mauritius, to express our solidarity in the face
of the repression that your organization is suffering as a direct
result of your brave contribution to the self-organization of the
unemployed, in these most difficult of times.
Our organization LALIT, which supports trade union and unemployed
workers' struggles, also strongly condemns the imprisonment by the
US Forces of your Secretary, Qasim Hadi, and members of the Worker-communist
party in Iraq.
This repression, coming in the wake of your peaceful demonstrations
for a minimum income to support the families of the unemployed, is
an attack on the freedom of political activitiy. The occupying forces,
having, themselves contributed to the destruction of employment in
the course of their barbaric war, have a special moral responsibility
to foster free political expression of the workers and unemployed
in the country. Instead, they impose military rule. We condemn them
for this.
We call for the unconditional release of all those arrested.
Yours, in solidarity,
