Protest Letter of the Socialist Alliance Australia to US- Administration in Baghdad after the arrest of Qasim Hadi and Adil Salih on November 23.2003

Mr. Paul Bremer
U.S. Civil administrator in Baghdad

Dear Sir,
We are writing to convey in the strongest possible terms our objections
to the arrests on November 23 of Qasim Hadi, President of the Union of
the Unemployed in Iraq, and Adil Salih, a member of the UUI leading
committee, by the US forces in Baghdad.
These arrests contravene the basic democratic principles of freedom of
association and organization.
Hadi and Salih's only "crime" has been to organise peaceful protests of
unemployed people in front the Civil Provincial Authority to make their
just demand of suitable jobs or unemployment insurance for the millions
of unemployed Iraqis and their families.
We demand that the political and civil rights and freedoms of the Iraqi
people be respected and that Qasim Hadi and Adil Salih be released from
US prisons in Baghdad immediately and unconditionally.
Furthermore, we demand that the US administration acknowledge the will
of the majority of Iraqi people and immediately withdraw all of its
occupying forces from Iraq.
